Creating a portable water feature is an easy thing to do. It is very versatile, working well on a deck, patio, backyard, or balcony and you can move it inside once the cold weather arrives. Not only does a water feature add the tranquil sound of trickling water to a room, it’s also a great humidifier for your home in the winter. They are very easy to maintain, and you can really make it unique. Here’s what you will need:
- Container- With so many different shapes, sizes, and styles available, you can easily complement your decor. If you’re going to use a ceramic container, it must be one that has been sealed, inside and out, at the time of manufacture to ensure that it won’t leak. Plastic is an excellent option - there are many plastic containers that look just like the real thing – stone, terra cotta, etc. They are lightweight, durable, and waterproof.
- Submersible Pump - Look for a high energy efficient pump with a grounded, three-prong plug, and a control valve so that you can set the rate of flow. There shouldn’t be any water splashing out – if the rim of your container is dry, then your floors will be too. Clean the foam filter when you notice that the water flow has slowed down (approximately every 2 to 3 months).
- Plants – Plants will purify the water, keeping it clean for you. You can use: water lettuce, water hyacinth, rushes, umbrella palms, water mint, floating fern, etc., but water lilies are not suitable. They require a great deal of light, and still water, but you can purchase silk ones to enhance your feature.
- Other items – rocks, under water lights, and small fish (for medium to large bowls) can be used.
